MonaCoin is an open source digital currency and a peer-to-peer (p2p) payment network.
The idea of MonaCoin was conceived from a Japan based bulletin board called 2-Channel (２ちゃんねる) by a person with the pseudonym "Mr Watanabe"
MonaCoin blockchain started on the 1st of January 2014.
Although MonaCoin can be seen as a popular coin in Japan, it is not a premined airdrop coin like other sovereign based coins such as AuroraCoin.
It has recently gained popularity ever since it is featured on mainstream media in Japan namely WBS TV Network Tokyo. It reported about a man purchasing a plot of land in Nagano with MonaCoin.
